Rules

Weapons Forms

Point Sparring

We will be using the decimal point system, which is common amongst eastern martial arts. The Judges first set of scores will be the “whole number (i.e. 8), the second set of scores will be the decimal, (i.e. 5) and the entire score is 8.5

The competitors will complete their form and judges will set a baseline score, the high and low scores will be eliminated and the sum of the remaining 3 scores will be the competitor’s final score. Restart will not be allowed and a deduction of points according to judge’s criteria.

If a tie results in any of the form competitions, the high and low score will be added back on. If the score is still tied, the competitors involved will do their Flourish again, and the judges will indicate by a show of hands who will advance.

If your form requires a larger area than the normal ring, let your judges know before you start your form

Each match will be two minutes or first competitor to received five points – whichever comes first. Points are received by touch contact strikes to the helmet, chest, stomach and kidney, controlled non-contact techniques to the face and back. We debated about allowing leg strikes to score, but felt that for safety and clarity this will not be allowed this year.

Any target can be scored on with non-contact strikes if the judges feel that contact could have been achieved if desired, or there was no attempt to block by the opponent (i.e. spinning back kick to the head). No strikes below the belt, with the exception of sweeps to the outside of opponent’s foot, followed by an offensive technique. Trapping defenses must be followed up with an immediate attack. In rare circumstances, the judges may call a lock as an attack; however, if there is an injury as a result of this, a warning will be given instead. Throws, if completed safely, will count only at the discretion of the judges. Every time a competitor committed a violation of rules, a warning is issued and the opponent will receive one point.

If blood is drawn, immediate disqualification will occur.

Mandatory Equipment

Foam headgear and full foam hand and foot gear are mandatory.

No knuckle punch or combination shin/instep type of equipment will be allowed.

Groin cup and mouth guard are recommended, but not mandatory.

Sword Sparring
Will be using padded/foam weapons.
All hits count, including hands, legs, etc.
Each round is to the first three good hits.
Will use a double-elimination style tournament (two losses until you are out).

Mandatory Equipment

Face and groin protection must be worn, fencing masks are recommended (will have some for loan).

Location: Alberta Avenue Community Hall, 118 Avenue and 92 street
Tournament to start at 10:00 am.
Volunteers are asked to show up by 9:00 am for set up.

We will have both single and team weapons forms. Therefore there are four divisions in total. The team weapons forms must demonstrate techniques against an opponent, as in a mock battle or demonstration of specific techniques. Realism and proper technique are paramount in this division. We will be calling the tournament ring a "Fechtplatz", which is the proper German term for the ring.

Tournament Registration and Waive fourm can be found here
Tournament Flier can be found here here

We require volunteers for time-keeping, score-keeping, judges, and runners. All help is appreciated. Volunteers will receive $5 off of their registration fee, if they volunteer in advance. Email for more information on volunteering
