The Swordman's Companion: A Modern Training Manual for the Medieval Longsword

The Swordman's Companion: A Modern Training Manual for the Medieval Longsword For those who are interested in Italian styles of longsword fighting, specifically Fiore and Vadi, this is an excellent resource. Guy Windsor writes this book aiming directly at the beginning practitioner, who has little or no experience.

He starts with an overview of the different perspectives from which one can discover” or use WMA, including LARPS, SCA, other re-creationists, and the pure martial arts. This is a great overview, because he does not criticise or compare any group at all. He merely gives a perspective on how they can use WMA in their own hobbies. He also gives a quick overview of the masters, the weapon, and some of the principles of “fencing”, and then some on the equipment and safety. Each of these chapters reads well, and is a good overview for any swordsman.

Thereafter Windsor writes a bit about unarmed combat and gives a few exercises. This is useful in the context of this book, because he concentrates on footwork, which is also used in weapons (sword) fighting. He shows the Italian use of a backstance (which isn't shown in any German work that I've seen). Having taken a workshop with Guy, I see the usefulness of this guard/stance, and its application in Western Longsword. Very cool!

The final three chapters are about drills and freeplay. The drill chapters, covering individual and pair drills, are longer than the other chapters, as these are the meat of the book. The photos are great, and without them, the explanations would not be complete. He gives several exercises that are useful at any level. The freeplay chapter is very short, but gives a really good overview. All-in-all I would say this is a great book for any swordsman! Rating: A+
